GHOSTS İN EGYPTIAN FOLK BELIEFS

Since time immemorial, the belief in good and evil spirits living or hovering over the earth or on it is widespread among all peoples, as here in Egypt.

In the preceding articles, the demons called the Gospel - which play the most important role in popular belief - were introduced. There are countless ideas of these spirits in the people. It is believed that there are Jewish, Christian and Islamic spirits, but the most dangerous are the unbelievers, the pagan. As people, they are divided into clans and tribes, and the interests of the community are more important than those of the individual.

They are also differentiated according to certain categories. So there are landscape spirits, which one knows only in certain areas and places, also one assigns them ranks, so there are Sultane, Paschas, Beys, Kadis, gentlemen and servants, sometimes even slaves. They have kinship relationships, there are women and men, and it even happens that they mention children of the demons.

One imagines them as incomprehensible, they are not physical but purely spiritual nature. However, they have the opportunity to transform themselves into animal forms and thus approach the human being. They prefer crawling animals, such as lizards, scorpions, and snakes, but there are also many accounts where they have met humans in the form of dogs and cats, sometimes they are seen riding on other animals. Some describe them as small, human-like beings, others say they have met them in giant form.

They are mostly found in lonely places, in hard-to-reach desert-like areas, near cemeteries or at wells and springs.
Nobody likes to meet them. When confronted with humans and animals, they spread terror, cause misfortune, disease, and are often held responsible for the deaths of individuals. But sometimes there are also friendly relationships with people, but basically they are scary to people and one would rather have nothing to do with them, because you do not know how they react.

Some people keep trying to contact the ghosts with magic and magic to get the good ones working for their purposes, but above all to ward off the evil spirits. To keep them away, a variety of defense mechanisms are used, with the greatest protection certain amulets offer.

The glands can influence all areas of human life. A particular group of them - called Tsar ghosts - on the other hand, are only made responsible for diseases, imaginary or real.

That diseases can be caused by ghosts is a general conception. It is believed that a ghost travels into people and wraps itself in the human body like a cloak. Another idea is that the spirits ride on man. The Tsar-mind itself prefers women, it is rare that a genus of this genus settles on men.

In order to harmonize and soothe this Tsar mind, Zar celebrations are held. At these celebrations, dances are performed according to particular tunes, animal sacrifices are made, the sick person in question must wear special clothing and put on certain jewelery amulets required by the spirit. The whole ceremony is overseen by a sheikh, a woman who is in contact with the spirit world, and who has the task of ascertaining which spirit out of the multitude of jinn controls the sick - the arusat az-zar - the "tsar-bride" and which Conditions he sets to desist from her. To find out, she must first find out the name of the djinn so she can address him. With the help of different melodies, she can determine the mind and ask with songs directed to him not to torment his victim too much and to let go of him.

Another widespread belief in the ghost is that a ghost - an afrit - arises from the blood of a violently killed man. These spirits are tightly bound to a human, a piece of mental debris that splintered from his soul. Some people are possessed by the spirits of the dead and provide information about facts, illnesses and causes of death. In order to express themselves, these spirits need a medium, which in their place provides information on questions. If such a spirit of the dead appears in a possessed person, it is endeavored to make him friendly, and not infrequently a tomb or a chapel is built for what is revealed, and he is nicknamed Sheikh. These sheikhs - from the great theologians and mystics of the past down to the holy village fool - are considered mediators or links to the otherworldly world. Their tombs and chapels often become the center of religious life, for such a spirit of the dead has shown its power through its appearance.

You could continue the ghost series as you wish. There is the dreaded mighty Karina, who is especially fond of babies and toddlers, not forgetting the poltergeists, who sometimes throw pebbles at the rooftops of houses with bricks and dirt. But there are also - and this is very comforting - meanwhile many amulets and rules of conduct that make it impossible for a spirit to approach the human being.
